8bit.nyc is a pixel map of what is happening in New York City today. It is built to be quick: open it, glance at the map and see what general neighborhood each event is in, without scrolling through long lists or checking a dozen different apps.

How it works

Every pin is something happening today. The listings are pulled automatically, a few times a day, from public calendars, ticketing sites and venues' own pages. Tap a pin to see what it is and when it starts, with a link to the source for tickets and the full details. Tap TODAY to look ahead to tomorrow, and use the filters to narrow things down by category or source.

A map, not a mailing address

The map is meant to give you a feel for where things are happening, so think of each pin as a pointer to the neighborhood. Listings come from outside sources and can change, so check the event's own page for the exact address and time before you head out.

8bit.nyc ("we", "us") is a pixel map of New York City that shows the day's events. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, why, and the choices you have.

Where the listings come from

We do not collect the event listings from you. Every event on the map comes from outside sources, including NYC.gov Events and NYC Parks, NYC Open Data street event permits and farmers markets, the NYC Council, the National Park Service, Ticketmaster, SeatGeek, Eventbrite, AMC Theatres, Artwrld, Patchbay and venues' own calendars. When you open a listing, buy a ticket or follow a link, you leave our site and that service's own privacy policy applies.

What we collect

• Messages you send us. If you use the contact form, we receive your name, email address, the topic you picked and your message, and keep them in our email inboxes so we can reply.
• Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit and which parts of the map they use. It sets cookies and collects information such as pages viewed, device and browser type, referring site and approximate location (city level). Google may process this information on its servers in the United States. See how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
• Live travel and weather info. Subway alerts, airport security waits and the weather are fetched by our server from the MTA, the Port Authority and the National Weather Service, so your browser does not contact them and they do not receive your information from us.
• Hosting and security. The site runs on Cloudflare. Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request details to deliver pages, block abuse and work out which country you are visiting from, so we know whether to ask for cookie consent.
• Cookies we set ourselves. One remembers your cookie choice if we asked you for it, and our preview site uses one to remember that you entered its password. Neither is used for tracking.

We do not ask for accounts, payment details or precise location, and we do not knowingly collect information about children under 13.

Advertising

The banner next to the header holds ads and featured events that we sell directly to advertisers. These are labeled as ads. We do not currently use third-party ad networks or ad tracking cookies. Clicking an ad takes you to the advertiser's site, where their privacy policy applies. If we add an ad partner that uses cookies, we will update this policy and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent first.

How we use information

• To answer your messages, including ad and event inquiries.
• To understand and improve how the site is used.
• To keep the site running and secure.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with anyone except the service providers named above (Google, Cloudflare and our email providers), when the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.

Visitors in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland

If you visit from these regions, Google Analytics stays off until you accept analytics cookies in the banner, and you can change your choice at any time from Cookie Settings in the menu. Our legal bases are your consent (analytics), our legitimate interest in running and securing the site (hosting and security) and our legitimate interest in replying to you (contact messages). You have the right to access, correct or delete your information, to object to or restrict its use, to data portability, to withdraw consent at any time, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Your information is processed in the United States, and our providers use safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses for these transfers.

Visitors in California and other US states

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to ask us to delete or correct it, and to opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising. We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising. To limit analytics, you can block cookies in your browser or install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

How long we keep it

Contact messages are kept as long as needed to deal with them and then for a reasonable period for our records. Google Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months. Cloudflare keeps request logs for a short period under its own policy.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. Significant changes will be noted on the site.

These terms apply to your use of the 8bit.nyc website (the "site"), run by 8bit.nyc ("we", "us"). By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

What the site is

The site is a free, for-fun map of things happening in New York City today. It is provided for general information only.

Listings come from outside sources

All event information on the site comes from outside sources, including NYC.gov Events and NYC Parks, NYC Open Data street event permits and farmers markets, the NYC Council, the National Park Service, Ticketmaster, SeatGeek, Eventbrite, AMC Theatres, Artwrld, Patchbay and venues' own calendars. We collect it automatically, usually a few times a day, and we do not create, check or control it.

• Dates, times, prices, locations and descriptions may be wrong, out of date, or placed in the wrong spot on the map. Events can be canceled or changed without notice. Always confirm with the organizer or the original listing before you go.
• A listing on the site does not mean we recommend, endorse or are connected with the event, the venue, the organizer or the source.
• Names, logos and trademarks belong to their owners. Event descriptions and links belong to the original sources.
• If you run an event or a source and want a listing corrected or removed, email info@8bit.nyc and we will look at it promptly.

Tickets and other websites

Links to listings, tickets and directions take you to websites we do not run. Any purchase, registration or booking you make is between you and that website or seller, under their terms. We are not responsible for their content, products, refunds or practices.

Ads and featured events

The banner next to the header shows paid ads and featured events, which are labeled as ads. Advertisers are responsible for their ads and for the events and products they promote, and placing an ad does not mean we endorse it. We may decline or remove any ad. Ad and featured event bookings are covered by a separate agreement with the advertiser. To ask about placing one, use the contact form and choose Ad/Event Inquiry, or email sales@8bit.nyc.

Using the site

You may use the site for your own personal, non-commercial purposes. Please do not:

• scrape, copy or republish the site or its listings in bulk, or use automated tools that put a heavy load on it;
• try to break, overload or get around the site's security or access controls;
• use the contact form to send spam, harassment or unlawful content.

The site's design, pixel map artwork and code belong to us, except for the listings and other material owned by others.

No warranties

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be accurate, complete, available or free of errors, and we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of the site, from relying on any listing, or from any event, venue, ticket seller or advertiser. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to one hundred US dollars (US$100). Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

Indemnity

If you misuse the site or break these terms and someone makes a claim against us as a result, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs from that claim.

Changes and ending access

We may change, pause or stop the site, or these terms, at any time. If we change the terms, we will update the date at the top, and continuing to use the site means you accept the new version.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law rules, and any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New York County, New York. If you live in the EU or UK, you keep any protections your local consumer law gives you.

Pins show the neighborhood, not the door

8bit.nyc is a pixel art map, drawn for fun and for a quick look at what is happening around the city. Every pin marks the approximate location of an event, so think of it as pointing to the right part of town rather than the exact building, entrance or room. Streets, parks, landmarks and buildings are drawn to look like New York, not to match it block for block.

Check the details before you go

Listings are collected automatically from outside sources such as public calendars, ticketing sites and venues' own pages. Dates, times, prices, addresses and line-ups can change or be wrong, and events can be cancelled. Always confirm with the event's own page or the organizer before you head out.

Subway, airports, weather and parking

Subway alerts, airport security wait times, the weather and the alternate side parking calendar come from the MTA, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the National Weather Service and NYC DOT. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. This information can be delayed or incomplete, and the subway lines are drawn roughly where they run. For travel, flights, parking and safety decisions, rely on the official sources linked in each panel and leave yourself extra time at the airport.

No endorsement

The characters on the map are pixel art made for fun and are not connected with, or endorsed by, any person or company. If you think something we drew is yours, or is you, and you would like it changed or removed, email info@8bit.nyc and we will look at it promptly. Showing an event, venue or organizer on the map does not mean we recommend or vouch for it. 8bit.nyc is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, and we are not responsible for any loss or inconvenience that comes from relying on it. See our Terms and Conditions for the full terms.

We want everyone to be able to use 8bit.nyc. The pixel map is drawn on a canvas, so it is hard to use with a screen reader, but everything on it is also available in plain text.

What works today

• Every event on the map is also in the list next to it (or in the tray on phones), with its title, time, place and a link, and works with a keyboard and a screen reader.
• The menus, filters, legal pages and contact form are regular buttons, links and form fields.

What we are still working on

• The easter eggs and the monster game are visual only.
• Some small pixel text has low contrast.

Tell us

If something on the site does not work for you, email info@8bit.nyc with what you were trying to do and the device or assistive technology you use. We will reply and try to fix it, or send you the information another way.
